His 73 points in 2022-23 broke Sergei Zubov’s Dallas Stars record for points in season, yet his defense remains the hallmark of his game. Miro Heiskanen is one of the best defensemen in the world and although in an ideal world he’d be playing on his strong side, Heiskanen is capable and comfortable playing on the right or left. The good news for the Stars is that they have an elite cornerstone to build out from. They need to be at a point where the matchup isn’t as lopsided and affords the strengths of their roster a chance to compensate for the gap. It is feasible, and necessary, though, for the Stars to upgrade the group. It’s also unrealistic to expect the Stars, slot-by-slot, to elevate their roster overnight from it was in that series to where the Golden Knights were, especially in a cap-strapped summer. The Golden Knights have arguably the deepest defensive core in the league, so it was a stretch to have expected the Stars to outplay them in that matchup.
But Dallas was grossly outmatched by Vegas on the blue line. Injuries and suspensions aside, the Stars were pretty evenly matched up front against the Golden Knights.
